The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

Context And Mission
The System Tools and Advanced Runtimes (STAR) group is a computer system group that explores research crossing multiple layers of the system software stack, from OS, runtimes and low-level APIs to programming models, tools, and applications. Our goal is to improve system software stack to support increasingly complex workloads such as traditional HPC, AI and Data Analytics on massively parallel HPC and Cloud platforms
The STAR group offers a part time position (10h/week) to work on the intersection between the Linux kernel and runtimes systems. We are looking for a student interested in working on system software for HPC systems. The successful candidate will participate in industrial and European research projects, with the possibility to disseminate the work done through conference or journal publications. We are looking for a motivated and talented student interested in working on the Linux kernel and runtimes systems.
The STAR group offers a part time position (10h/week) to work on the intersection between the Linux kernel and runtimes systems. Key Duties
- Boot Linux OS on experimental Risc-V platforms
- Extend the Linux kernel with new interfaces and scheduling policies to improve the performance of task-based runtime systems.
Requirements

Education
- Undergraduate student in Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering or equivalent.

Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Experience in Linux kernel or parallel runtimes development will be highly valued.
- Excellent computing skills and experience in C/C++ programming languages.

Competences
- Ability to take the initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines and pressure
- Ability to work independently and in a team
Conditions
- The position will be located at BSC within the Computer Sciences Department
- We offer a part-time fellowship (10h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours,
- Duration: 4 months
- Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
- Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
- Starting date: 16/09/2024
