About BSC

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

We are particularly interested for this role in the strengths and lived experiences of women and underrepresented groups to help us avoid perpetuating biases and oversights in science and IT research. In instances of equal merit, the incorporation of the under-represented sex will be favoured.

We promote Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, fostering an environment where each and every one of us is appreciated for who we are, regardless of our differences.

If you consider that you do not meet all the requirements, we encourage you to continue applying for the job offer. We value diversity of experiences and skills, and you could bring unique perspectives to our team.

Context And Mission

The Computational Genomics group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center is intensively involved in developing and applying tools for personalized diagnosis, prevention and treatment protocols for health. This activity occurs within the BSC, which hosts one of the largest supercomputers in Europe: Marenostrum4, around which we develop HPC-based tools and tools linked to other technologies and architectures, like GPUs and GPFAs. Among the major scientific achievements, we can highlight the design of the SMuFin software for the fast identification of somatic variants in cancer genomes and its application for the analysis of chromosomal alterations in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia genomes.

The Computational Genomics group seeks a technician with bioinformatics or computer-related background to design and develop software integrated solutions for the analysis of disease genomes in close collaboration with biological and biomedical colleagues. This activity will be carried out in the context of a project part of the EUropean-CANadian Cancer network (EUCANCan) that aims to enable Personalized Medicine in Oncology by promoting the generation and sharing of harmonized genomic data.

This activity will also design and implement a pilot integration of data infrastructures in a national and international environment within the project IMPaCT (Infraestructura de Medicina de Precisión).

The candidate will be part of a subgroup in charge of developing pipelines and software solutions in the context of HPC to analyse genomic data. This involves handling thousands of genomic sequences and biomedical data, which offers a great opportunity to enter and evolve within the data engineering and bioinformatics field, which currently has strong computational needs and provides many interesting challenges.

Priority will be given to highly motivated, persistent and proactive candidates with a computer-related background and the ambition to develop their careers in computational genomics and biomedicine. More information about the group and the activity can be found at: http://cg.bsc.es/cg.
