Context And Mission

The Earth System Services Group (ESS) at the Earth Sciences Department conducts interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research to enhance societal value of climate prediction services, atmospheric composition and weather forecasting. The group actively engages with society, decision-makers, and businesses to exchange knowledge and develop user-oriented services. The aim of the ESS is to enhance knowledge and technology transfer and improve resilience, by accelerating adaptation to a rapidly changing environment.

The ESS group is looking for a candidate with mixed experience in natural and social sciences from any nationality to map and analyse the landscape of climate services in Europe and beyond. The selected person will closely collaborate with climate scientists, social scientists and communication experts, as well as potential and advanced users of climate and environmental information. Combining social science research data, advanced analytics, and high-performance computing (HPC), the candidate will work to enhance the interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity of the Earth Sciences Department.

The successful candidate is expected to learn about and participate in ongoing scientific activities where the ESS team is involved, with a focus on social data management architecture and standards with the vision of making such data more accessible for research while preserving privacy. Experience in interdisciplinary and international teams, as well as proved experience in the analysis of social science data are key for the position.

Key Duties

  • Perform a systematic mapping and analysis of the landscape of climate services initiatives and actors in Europe and beyond, the exchange of information among them, and the co-creation of new knowledge
  • Carry out research tasks within EU funded projects (e.g. Climateurope2)
  • Contribute to a strategy for sharing and archiving social science research data and metadata in repositories that have a user friendly integration with HPC
  • Develop skills for the analysis of social science research data using advanced analytics and HPC
  • Ensure the appropriate usage and sharing of social science data preserving data privacy and considering the principles of ethics
  • Write reports and papers about the landscape of climate services and their upscaling, recommendations and good practices for structuring, curating and analysing social science research data, and similar topics
  • Coordinate with other projects and initiatives (external and in-house) to organize joint activities

Requirements

  • Education
    • A degree in physics, mathematics, computer science or related discipline
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • 1-2 years of experience in computational social science methods and the use of AI tools
    • Good programming skills
    • Background in social sciences
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Professional experience with European institutions or International organisations will be valued
  • Competences
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
    • Ability to work in a professional environment within an interdisciplinary and international team
    • Good public speaking skills
    • Self-motivated and enthusiastic person about the tasks to be performed with a strong sense of curiosity

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
  • We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
  • Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
  • Starting date: 01/03/2025

Development of the recruitment process



The selection will be carried out through a competitive examination system ("Concurso-Oposición"). The recruitment process consists of two phases:

  • Curriculum Analysis: Evaluation of previous experience and/or scientific history, degree, training, and other professional information relevant to the position. - 40 points
  • Interview phase: The highest-rated candidates at the curriculum level will be invited to the interview phase, conducted by the corresponding department and Human Resources. In this phase, technical competencies, knowledge, skills, and professional experience related to the position, as well as the required personal competencies, will be evaluated. - 60 points. A minimum of 30 points out of 60 must be obtained to be eligible for the position.



The recruitment panel will be composed of at least three people, ensuring at least 25% representation of women.



In accordance with OTM-R principles, a gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for each vacancy at the beginning of the process. After reviewing the content of the applications, the panel will begin the interviews, with at least one technical and one administrative interview. At a minimum, a personality questionnaire as well as a technical exercise will be conducted during the process.



The panel will make a final decision, and all individuals who participated in the interview phase will receive feedback with details on the acceptance or rejection of their profile.
