Equity4EarthSciences

Equity4ES is an initiative from the BSC Earth Sciences Department, whose goal is to make the work environment more comfortable for all by raising awareness of gender issues in our department and supporting equitable recognition of the scientific achievements of our women researchers.

The initiative was launched in the spring of 2021, on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11), based on the UN statistic that “less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women”, which made us ask ourselves about the situation within our own department.

With the primary goal of improving the work environment for all, we organized to take action around several themes that we feel we can address:

  • Improving the gender balance in our department, by monitoring our recruiting practices as well as the ways in which we maintain and support the research activities of our female colleagues,
  • Raising awareness on gender issues within the department by providing topics for discussion through a monthly gazette, organizing seminars by experts on these issues, and advertising related events outside of our usual work network. Our gazette covers topics such as unconscious gender bias, gender quotas, and online exposure of women scientists.
