Bioinfo4Women. Outstanding Young Female Bioinformaticians Programme

Bioinfo4Women is an initiative from the Life Sciences Department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center to promote the research done by women in computational biology, with a particular focus on their transition from postdoc to junior independent PI positions. Bioinfo4Women supports researchers in computational biology to develop their scientific careers by promoting the knowledge and experience exchange of outstanding women researchers through activities such as seminars, conferences, training opportunities, and mentorships. Bioinfo4Women seeks to provide further visibility to the contribution of women in different fields of biology and career stages, with a particular focus on personalised medicine, bioinformatics and HPC. The Bioinfo4Women vision is to promote gender equality for better science in computational biology by boosting women's representation in scientific and technological leadership, ultimately aiming to build a more collaborative, supportive, equal and excellent scientific community that benefits society.

The Bioinfo4Women pursues the following specific objectives:

  • Support women bioinformaticians and computational biologists in their transition from senior postdocs to independent junior PIs;
  • Promote the recognition of the scientific achievements of women bioinformaticians and computational biologists;
  • Increase the participation of women in bioinformatics research and leadership by promoting the exchange of knowledge and experience of outstanding women researchers through activities such as seminars, conferences, training opportunities, and mentorships, and facilitating collaborations with established research groups;
  • Raise awareness and promote research on sex and gender bias analysis in computational biology and AI research for personalised medicine applications and scientific practice;
  • Foster collaboration and communication among women scientists in the international scientific community by establishing a network of researchers and institutions, thereby multiplying their impact.

The programme contributes to fulfilling the objective of the BSC of promoting equity and diversity in scientific research for excellence in science.
