Remy Hoek Spaans is a Recognised Researcher at the BSC. Within the Global Health Resilience team, she is mainly working on the E4Warning and HARMONIZE projects. In 2021 she was awarded an early career grant by the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH) to work on her study "The impact of flooding on the spatial epidemiology of malaria: the case of Cyclone Idai in southern Malawi".  

Before joining the BSC, she was based at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine where she worked on her PhD thesis focussing on malaria epidemiology in Malawi. This involved evaluating an indoor residual spraying (IRS) programme in an agricultural environment in Chikwawa district, as well as studying spatial patterns of malaria seasonality across Malawi. Before that she worked on a cluster-randomised trial in Uganda. She holds an MRes in Quantitative Skills in Global Health from Lancaster University, and a MSc in Control of Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She also has teaching experience as a teaching assistant at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Liverpool University. 

In her free time Remy enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, caving, cycling, and swimming.
