Minister Carlos Cuerpo visits BSC

The Minister for the Economy, Trade and Enterprise was briefed on the research being carried out at the centre and was particularly interested in the projects funded by the NextGenerationEU Recovery Fund.

The Spanish Minister of Economy, Trade and Enterprise, Carlos Cuerpo, visited the facilities of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) this Thursday. Mr Cuerpo met with the Director of the BSC, Mateo Valero, the Associate Director, Josep M. Martorell, the Operations Director, Sergi Girona, the Head of Innovation and Technology Transfer, Mariona Sanz, and the Vice-Rector for Transfer, Innovation and Entrepreneurship of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Climent Molins.

During the meeting, the Minister was able to learn more about the research being carried out at BSC in the different departments of Computer Science, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences and Computational Applications for Science and Engineering, as well as the challenges for the future. He also showed special interest in the projects funded by the NextGenerationEU Recovery Fund, such as the MareNostrum 5, the Zettascale laboratory, the large Spanish language model and the QuantumSpain initiative.

After the meeting, Minister Cuerpo and his team visited the site of the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer, one of the most powerful in the world and one of Spain's most important scientific and technological infrastructures. Just last week, the Government announced an investment of up to 90 million euros to expand MareNostrum 5, increasing its capacity from the current 314 petaflops (pflops) to 450 pflops.
