BSC was selected for the Best HPC Response to Societal Plight (Urgent Computing, COVID-19) and the Best HPC Collaboration for the RISC2 project, led by BSC
20th Annual HPCwire Awards Presented to Leaders in the Global HPC Community
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) has been recognized in the annual HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards, presented at the 2022 International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis (SC22), in Dallas, Texas. BSC has received double honors: the best Readers’ Choice: and the best Editors’ Choice Award.
- Readers’ Choice: Best HPC Response to Societal Plight (Urgent Computing, COVID-19)
During the vetting for Paxlovid, University of Valencia researchers, led by the professor of physical chemistry Iñaki Tuñón used supercomputing to determine how the drug inhibits SARS-CoV-2. The researchers ran simulations on the MareNostrum 4 supercomputer (built by Lenovo leveraging Intel technologies) at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. The simulations and corresponding visualization illuminated exactly why Paxlovid is so effective in debilitating SARS-CoV-2. BSC is including special track on the MareNostrum 4 access calls for any Covi19 related research.
- Editors’ Choice: Best HPC Collaboration (Academia/Government/Industry)
The RISC2 project, following the RISC Project, aims to promote and improve the relationship between research and industrial communities, focusing on HPC applications and infrastructure deployment, between Europe and Latin America. Led by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, RISC2 brings together 16 partners from 12 countries.
About the HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards
The list of winners was revealed at the SC22 HPCwire booth, as well as on the HPCwire website: www.hpcwire.com/2022-hpcwire-awards-readers-editors-choice
The coveted annual HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards are determined through a nomination and voting process with the global HPCwire community, as well as selections from the HPCwire editors. The awards are an annual feature of the publication and constitute prestigious recognition from the HPC community. They are revealed each year to kick off the annual supercomputing conference, which showcases high performance computing, networking, storage, and data analysis.
“The 2022 Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards are exceptional, indeed. Solutions developed with HPC led the world out of the Pandemic, and we officially broke the Exascale threshold — HPC has now reached a billion, billion operations per second!” said Tom Tabor, CEO of Tabor Communications, publishers of HPCwire. “Between our worldwide readership of HPC experts and the most renowned panel of editors in the industry, the Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards represent resounding recognition of HPC accomplishments throughout the world. Our sincerest gratitude and hearty congratulations go out to all of the winners.”
