BSC presents its most innovative technologies to transform society and drive the industry of the future at MWC

28 February 2025

For the first time, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center will have its own stand at Mobile World Congress, with a 100m² booth in 4YFN, the area dedicated to start-ups at one of the world's largest technology industry trade events

BSC will offer a full programme of sessions in the Agora, showcasing nearly 40 technologies developed at the centre in areas such as chip design, climate change, AI applications for health and quantum computing.

The space will also host the Language Fair, an installation where computation, probability and language are the protagonists and where participants can win a 'quantum' dinner in one of the most iconic spaces in Barcelona's technology ecosystem.

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) will display its catalogue of the most disruptive technologies at the forthcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC), showing how supercomputing and artificial intelligence (AI) are essential tools for driving advances in science and engineering in fields as diverse as the design of healthier and more sustainable cities, adaptation to climate change or the search for new sources of energy.

For the first time, BSC will have its own stand at the MWC, one of the world's leading technology and connectivity events, which will be held at Fira Barcelona from 3 to 6 March. This space (Hall 8.0 - 4YFN & Partner Theatres stand 8.0C1), measuring 100 square metres, will be located in the 4 Years From Now (4YFN), the area dedicated to technological start-ups at the MWC. Ten BSC spin-off companies will also be represented, from sectors such as the design of open-source chips, the construction of quantum computers, the development of new drugs and the creation of generative AI tools.

The Agora on the stand will be a meeting point for innovation and knowledge. For four days, it will host an extensive programme of conferences with the participation of a wide range of researchers who will present some of their most outstanding projects and technologies. Each day will be devoted to a specific area:

  • Monday 3 - Development of open-source chips based on RISC-V technology.
  • Tuesday 4 - Health and sustainability: AI-based technologies for predicting the risk of stroke using mobile devices or improving the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases; systems for predicting air quality in urban areas; or methods for predicting outbreaks of climate-sensitive infectious diseases months before they occur, among others.
  • Wednesday 5 - AI and language technologies: new language models with transformative and innovative potential to enable companies in different sectors to automate routine tasks and help them become more efficient and competitive in the new digital era.
  • Thursday 6 - Disruptive technologies: new quantum computing solutions and ecosystems and progress towards a digital twin of a fusion reactor.

In addition, BSC scientists will participate in other sessions held at different MWC venues, such as the Mobile World Capital Barcelona (MWCapital) stand and the Talent Arena, among others. In total, 74 BSC researchers will have an active presence at the event, and 14 technologies developed at the centre will be presented, as well as 25 other initiatives that are still in the project phase.

BSC will also present together with MWCapital an interactive experience showing a urban digital twin of Barcelona, which can be visited at the MWCapital stand. The urban digital twins represent a pioneering technology that combines simulations and data from different areas of the city and the behaviour of its population to design more liveable and sustainable cities.

Meetings with investors

The BSC stand at 4YFN will host a meeting between representatives of nine BSC spin-offs and the local and international investment community on Tuesday 4 between 12pm and 3pm. In this session, BSC entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to give an overview of their business projects to around twenty investors and accelerator representatives, and there will be a networking space to create synergies between all the participating companies, BSC and the investment ecosystem.

Show with a ‘quantum’ prize

BSC will open its stand with an early 20th century fair proposal in which supercomputing, probability and language will be the protagonists. The ‘Language Fair’ will showcase probability and word games, some of the key pieces of the generative AI that is changing the world.

The games will use language models developed by BSC and trained on the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer. The aim is to demonstrate in a creative way that supercomputing and natural language processing can be used to create innovative experiences.

Players will be able to participate in three different language experiences: ‘Collapse Roulette’, which will show how the meaning of a word is volatile and not fixed until it is contextualised; ‘Data Bingo’, generated with words related to data science and artificial intelligence; and ‘The Story Machine’, which will show how combining elements is one of the most powerful mechanisms of creativity.

Participants will have the chance to win a ‘quantum’ dinner at the BSC, with a guided tour and a unique gastronomic experience next to the first quantum computer in Spain with 100% European technology.
