The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. Context And Mission
The Computer Architecture and Operating System group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center aims at carrying out research on programming models for critical embedded systems in charge of controlling fundamental parts of cars, airplanes and satellites. Our work is mainly done in the context of bilateral projects with several processor companies as well as several European-funded projects. The Research Engineer position integrates advanced AI research with a focus on aligning technical systems with European legal and regulatory requirements for critical systems. The role emphasizes analyzing the interplay between data governance, AI explainability, and legal frameworks (e.g., AI Act, GDPR, DSA). Responsibilities include contributing to the development developing actionable technical designs for legal compliance, legal assessment of testing on real-world platforms, and creating guidelines that bridge legal part of regulation and technical feasibility innovation. This position will contribute significantly to trustworthy AI in critical systems for combating disinformation, ensuring fairness, transparency, accountability, trustworthiness, legal compliance and sustainability.

Key Duties
- Conduct in-depth analysis of data governance regulations (e.g., DGA, GDPR, AI Act) to identify technical requirements for trustworthy AI systems.
- Develop frameworks that translate legal mandates into actionable technical designs, with a focus on reliability, explainability, fairness, and transparency
- Collaborate with technical partners to evaluate AI systems ensuring compliance with EU legal standards on data and AI
- Contribute to actionable policy guidelines to support the European regulatory framework for AI governance
Requirements

Education
- Master’s Degree in Law, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related interdisciplinary field. Any other Master’s Degree will be considered of added value
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law, Computer Science, Mathematics, or similar

Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Understanding of European legal frameworks (e.g., AI Act, GDPR, DSA)
- Experience or strong interest in interdisciplinary work bridging AI and legal studies
- International experience of working for the private sector is highly valued. Additional points are awarded for the experience in companies related to the field of this position

Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Knowledge of data governance principles and ethical AI frameworks is a plus
- Experience with LaTeX and technical documentation is welcome
- In case of law applicants from Legal background: additional expertise of different European jurisdictions will be considered of added value

Competences
- Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills with a proactive, results-oriented attitude
- Good communication skills including a good command of the English language (written and spoken)
- Open to learn Python programming and AI frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or JAX as well as mathematical notation
- Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams
Conditions
- The position will be located at BSC within the Computer Sciences Department
- We offer a part-time contract (18.75h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
- Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
- Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
- Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
- Starting date: 16/02/2025
