Context And Mission
This position is hosted by the Climate Variability and Change (CVC) Group within BSC's Earth Science Department. The CVC Group undertakes fundamental research to (1) understand climate variability and change, including for climate extremes, (2) investigate global biogeochemical dynamics, and the effectiveness and impacts of carbon removal technologies to mitigate climate change, (3) developing new Earth System modeling capabilities, including at ground-breaking resolutions and (4) improving our ability to forecast climate variations and biogeochemical dynamics from one month to multiple decades into the future, both at global and regional scales.
The applicant will play a central role in the climate prediction team, coordinating the contributions to the European project IMPETUS4CHANGE and contributing too to other climate prediction activities within the European projects ASPECT and EXPECT, as well as the operational prediction system with which the CVC group contributes to the yearly annual-to-decadal update endorsed by the WMO. The candidate is also expected to supervise the work of other junior members of the climate prediction team.

Key Duties
- Contribute to the production of initial conditions for the seasonal/decadal predictions with EC-Earth
- Leading the production of the operational decadal predictions
- Contribute to the development of the next operational decadal prediction system based on EC-Earth4
- Develop a brand new blending methodology to combine decadal predictions and projections
- Supervise the work of junior members of the grouup
- Contribute to the writing of project deliverables
Requirements

Education
- PhD in atmospheric science, applied mathematics, engineering, fluid dynamics or in a related discipline

Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Proven ability to prepare and submit manuscripts to peer-review journals
- A demonstrated ability to develop experimental set ups that address specific climate modeling problems
- Experience in ocean/atmosphere modelling (or environmental modelling) and in handling climate model output
- Programming skills: scripting (e.g. bash, python), data analysis and visualization software (e.g. CDO, NCO, R, Python, NCL)

Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Interest and capacity in participating in the writing and, when possible, leading the preparation of research and computing proposals
- Interest in tutoring and/or advising master and PhD students

- Highly collaborative spirit and ability to work as part of a large, strongly-coordinated team and to continuously share both knowledge and tools
Conditions
- The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department

- Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
- Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
- Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
- Starting date: 01/01/2025
