About BSC

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

We promote Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, fostering an environment where each and every one of us is appreciated for who we are, regardless of our differences.

If you consider that you do not meet all the requirements, we encourage you to continue applying for the job offer. We value diversity of experiences and skills, and you could bring unique perspectives to our team.

Context And Mission

The Earth Sciences Department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-ES), led by Prof. Francisco Doblas-Reyes, develops advanced global climate models to conduct a wide range of climate experiments at cutting-edge spatial resolutions, including storm- and eddy-resolving scales. The Department is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to assist in the development and analysis of high-resolution global simulations using the IFS/NEMO climate model.

This position, funded by the European project EERIE, involves (1) providing scientific feedback to improve the physical robustness of a Digital Twin based on IFS-NEMO, developed at BSC within the Destination Earth initiative; (2) leading the production of state-of-the-art simulations with an eddy-resolving version of IFS-NEMO; and (3) contributing to scientific analyses focused on the influence of ocean eddies on the future European climate, including their role in high-impact extreme events.

Key Duties

  • Provide scientific inputs for the development of the eddy-resolving version of the model NEMO-IFS
  • Conducting historical and future scenario simulations with this new model configuration, with additional idealized storyline experiments planned to explore how certain high-impact extreme events may evolve in a warmer world
  • Preparing and submitting supercomputing access proposals to support the production of the high resolution simulations
  • Lead scientific analyses on the role of mesoscale air-sea interactions in shaping the response of the atmospheric circulation in the North Atlantic to climate change
  • Conducting a process-based evaluation of the drivers of summer extremes in the NEMO-IFS simulations, with a particular focus on hydroclimate extremes
  • Coordinate the BSC contributions to several project deliverables

Requirements

  • Education
    • A PhD in atmospheric sciences, applied mathematics, engineering, fluid dynamics or in a related discipline is highly recommended
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Postdoctoral experience will be valued
    • Proven ability to prepare and submit manuscripts to peer-review journals
    • Experience developing experimental set ups that address specific climate modeling problems
    • Experience in ocean/atmosphere modelling (or environmental modelling) and in handling climate model outputs.
    • Demonstrated experience in high resolution modelling will be valued
    • Programming skills: scripting (e.g. bash, python), data analysis and visualization software (e.g. CDO, NCO, R, Python, NCL)
    • Experience in handling large datasets, and a minimum knowledge of NetCDF encoding
    • Experience in HPC and parallel computing (multi-threaded applications)
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Interest and capacity in participating in the writing and, when possible, leading the preparation of research and computing proposals
    • Knowledge of version control systems (git, svn, cvs…)
    • Interest in tutoring and/or advising master and PhD students
  • Competences
    • Fluency in spoken and written English, while fluency in other European languages will be also valued
    • Highly collaborative spirit and ability to work as part of a large, strongly-coordinated team and to continuously share both knowledge and tools

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
  • We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
  • Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
  • Starting date: 01/01/2025

Applications procedure and process

All applications must be made through BSC website and contain:

  • A full CV in English including contact details
  • A Cover Letter with a statement of interest in English, including two contacts for further references - Applications without this document will not be considered

In accordance with the OTM-R principles, a gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for every vacancy at the beginning of the process. After reviewing the content of the applications, the panel will start the interviews, with at least one technical and one administrative interview. A profile questionnaire as well as a technical exercise may be required during the process.

The panel will make a final decision and all candidates who had contacts with them will receive a feedback with details on the acceptance or rejection of their profile.

At BSC we are seeking continuous improvement in our recruitment processes, for any suggestions or feedback/complaints about our Recruitment Processes, please contact recruitment [at] bsc [dot] es.
