The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. Context And Mission

The System Tools and Advanced Runtimes (STAR) group is a computer systems research team that investigates multiple layers of the system software stack —from operating systems, runtimes, and low-level APIs to programming models, tools, and applications. We aim to enhance the system software stack to support increasingly complex workloads, including traditional high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence (AI), and data analytics on massively parallel HPC and cloud platforms.
The STAR group offers a part-time position (20 hours/week) for a student to work on the development of HPC tools and runtimes. We are seeking a motivated and talented student interested in low-level programming, advanced parallelization techniques, parallel programming models, and runtime systems. The successful candidate will participate in industrial and European research projects, with the possibility of disseminating their work through conference presentations or journal publications.

Requirements

  • Education
    • Undergraduate student in Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering or equivalent.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in low-level programming or parallel programming will be highly valued.
    • Excellent computing skills and experience in C/C++ programming languages.
  • Competences
    • Ability to take the initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines and pressure
    • Ability to work independently and in a team

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Computer Sciences Department
  • We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
  • Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
  • Starting date: 4/12/2024
