About BSC

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 900 staff from 55 countries.

Context And Mission

We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher to join our group for a position focusing on the combined use of climate simulations and Earth observations to constrain climate predictions and projections. This position will be hosted in the Climate Variability and Change (CVC) Group within BSC's Earth Science Department. The CVC Group undertakes fundamental research to (1) understand climate variability and change, including for climate extremes, (2) investigate global biogeochemical dynamics, and the effectiveness and impacts of carbon removal technologies to mitigate climate change, (3) develop new Earth System modeling capabilities, and (4) improve our ability to forecast the climate variations from one month to multiple decades into the future, both at global and regional scales.

The candidate will combine large ensembles of climate simulations and Earth observations to develop refined predictions and projections of the future climate, seeking to improve the predicted changes in climate extremes for the next 1-20 years and to understand and attribute the processes driving these changes. The position aims to exploit in particular Earth observations of the land surface (e.g. soil moisture, vegetation) and ocean (e.g. sea surface height, ocean heat content) states for improved predictions and projections of climate change.
The offered position will contribute to the Horizon Europe project EXPECT (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101137656).

The candidate will perform independent research, contribute to the completion of project deliverables, and actively publish the scientific results in high-quality journals.

This is an open-ended position subject to follow-up funding availability.

Key Duties

  • Develop constraints for climate predictions and projections that integrate earth observations and climate model simulations
  • Carefully evaluate the forecast quality and improvements achieved by the new constraining methods
  • Elucidate the roles of internal variability and external forcings in observed climate changes by applying the novel constraints to large ensemble experiments with individual forcings (e.g. the Large Ensemble Single Forcing Model Intercomparison Project, LESFMIP)
  • Conduct the preparation of scientific publications, and present the research at scientific workshops, conferences and project meetings
  • The candidate will work closely with scientists within the Climate Variability and Change Group and other groups of the Earth Sciences Department, and with international project partners

Requirements

  • Education
    • PhD in atmospheric or climate sciences, physics, applied mathematics, or a related discipline
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Demonstrated experience in the analysis of large climate model ensemble data
    • Experience in analysing satellite data / Earth observations in comparison to climate model data
    • Identification of climate variability and forcing responses in a changing climate
    • Proven ability to prepare and submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed scientific journals
    • Programming skills: scripting (e.g. bash, Python), data analysis and visualization software (e.g. CDO, NCO, R, Python)
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Interest and capacity to participating in the writing of research and computing proposals
    • Knowledge of version control systems (git, svn, …)
    • Fluency in spoken and written English, while fluency in other European languages will be also valued
  • Competences
    • Highly collaborative spirit and ability to work as part of a large, strongly-coordinated team and to continuously share both knowledge and tools
    • Good set of interpersonal skills to interact and build strong relations with a diverse set of people

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
  • We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
  • Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
  • Starting date: September 2024 if possible, or as soon as possible

Applications procedure and process

Review of applications will start on 1st of July 2024, and the position will remain open until a suitable candidate has been hired. All applications must be made through BSC website and contain:

  • A full CV in English including contact details
  • A Cover Letter with a statement of interest in English, including two contacts for further references - Applications without this document will not be considered In accordance with the OTM-R principles, a gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for every vacancy at the beginning of the process. After reviewing the content of the applications, the panel will start the interviews, with at least one technical and one administrative interview. A profile questionnaire as well as a technical exercise may be required during the process. The panel will make a final decision and all candidates who had contacts with them will receive a feedback with details on the acceptance or rejection of their profile. At BSC we are seeking continuous improvement in our recruitment processes, for any suggestions or feedback/complaints about our Recruitment Processes, please contact recruitment [at] bsc [dot] es.
