It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. Context And Mission
 
The Computational Genomics group, led by ICREA professor Toni Gabaldón, is looking for a highly motivated junior full-stack software engineer to develop and maintain tools and databases required in the context of the PROLIVE project (PLEC2023-010225, MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033). The project is centered on the development of an efficient platforms to analyze NGS data from diverse samples, including whole genome shotgun, metabarcoding, and metagenomics samples. The candidate will join a dynamic research group within the Life Sciences department. The researcher will work in a sophisticated HPC environment and will have access to systems and computational infrastructures. Priority will be given to highly motivated and proactive candidates with a bioinformatics-related background and with the ambition to develop their career in the field of computational genomics.

 

Key Duties
 
  • Maintaining both back-end and front-end codebases of cgenomics
  • Designing and developing new software features for cgenomics tools
  • Managing DevOps operations related to software deployment and maintenance across various computing infrastructures
  • Support other researchers in programming or HPC-related tasks
  • Report to the group and team leaders
 
Requirements
 
  • Education
    • Professional degree in bioinformatics, programming, web applications, or related disciplines
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Proficiency in web development using CSS, HTML, Bootstrap, and similar technologies.
    • Proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language, such as Python, Java, C, or similar.
    • Proficiency with database technologies such as MariaDB or other relational databases.
    • Knowledge of containerization technologies such as Docker and Singularity.
    • Knowledge of HPC usage and DevOps.
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • The ideal candidate will have a strong background in software engineering, a keen attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment
    • Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • Competences
    • Ability to work both independently and within a team.
 
Conditions
 
  • The position will be located at BSC within the Life Sciences Department
  • We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
  • Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
  • Starting date: 01/07/2024
