The RePort project, which has modified 26 trucks to boost the use of natural gas as an alternative fuel, has managed to reduce emissions of polluting gases by 20% and 20% of total fuel consumption, according to the preliminary results of the pilot tests of the project.
The project has been presented today, led by the Port of Barcelona, and which aims to improve the environment and promote technological development, innovation and research in the field of land transport of goods. The project has been structured in four activities led by different partners: the study of air quality, by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC); the design of the conversion of vehicles to Dual-Fuel, by Idiada; supply logistics, by Gas Natural Fenosa, and testing and monitoring, by Idiada and Atec.
Marc Guevara, researcher of the Earth Sciences department at BSC, explains that “our centre coordinates the emission and air quality modelling work package of the RePort project. The BSC is responsible of modelling the current state of the air quality in the Port of Barcelona and evaluating the potential impact of converting the trucks that operate in the Port to Dual-Fuel System in terms of emission and air pollutants concentration reductions”.
The initiative is integrated into the Ris3cat Mobility Eco Community, coordinated by Ficosa and co-financed with European Regional Development Funds of the European Union, managed by Acció. The School of Engineering of Barcelona East (Eebe-Upc), Dimsport Spain, Renewable Technical Consulting and the European School-Intermodal Transport also participate in the project.
