Of the 20 Incoming fellowships awarded in this first edition of the programme two of them will fund BSC research.
Eduard Porta, researcher of the Life Sciences department and Martí Galí, a researcher taken recently up into the Earth Sciences department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), have been selected to be part of the Junior Leader “la Caixa” programme.
Eduard Porta was already part of the center and through this fellowship will be able to continue his research in genomics of cancer and immunology. In this research, Porta will analyze large cancer genomics datasets using systems genetics approaches to understand how all these factors interact with each other and understand the molecular architecture of cancer and immunobiology.
For his part, Martí Galí came from the Université Laval (Quebec, Canada) and has been able to join BSC through this fellowship to work on oceanic carbon sequestration. Marine microbes take up atmospheric carbon dioxide and export it to the deep ocean in form of sinking particles. In the ORCAS project, they will combine cutting-edge robotic observations and numerical models to better understand and predict this climate-relevant process.
Porta and Galí have obtained an Incoming frame fellowship and will have a three-year contract. In addition to the economical amount, the Junior Leader programme includes an interdisciplinary training programme that focuses on aspects such as innovation and leadership. This programme has been specially designed by leading international companies in the sector.
The Junior Leader “la Caixa” programme has awarded 20 Incoming fellowships in this first edition and two of them are for researchers who will be able to develop their work at BSC. The centre is proud of this ratio, as it is a recognition of the researchers and their projects value, while ensuring this excellent research.
