DUE TO THE EXCEPTIONAL SITUATION THAT WE ARE FOR THE COVID-19 THE ORGANIZERS HAVE DECIDED TO CANCEL THE CAMPS THIS YEAR AND POSTPONE THE ACTIVITY TO 2021.
Young technologists will offer inspirational talks to girls aged 12 to 16.
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-Barcelona Tech (UPC) and the CIM UPC launch a joint initiative to promote the interest of secondary school students in technology. Technogirls is a summer camp on technology managed by Eix Estels with activities designed and directed by a team of the BSC, the UPC and the CIM UPC. Technological projects will revolve around a thematic axis, climate change and sustainability and the development of technology that helps us preserve the planet and reverse climate change.
In addition to practical workshops and recreational activities, each day the participants will have the opportunity to listen and share lunch with an expert from the technological field, who will explain her professional experience and experiences in the field.
The camps are aimed at girls between 12 and 16 years old (1st ESO-1st Baccalaureate) to arouse the interest of young women towards scientific-technical careers. With this activity, the BSC, the UPC and the CIM UPC seek to take another step in the fight against the gender gap in this field.
“Every effort we can make to encourage girls to know and be attracted to the world of technology is necessary. The centers that have technology in our DNA know from experience that, when hiring new researchers, the resumes that come to us are mostly men and, however, the women we hire are excellent professionals. We must encourage girls to be more present in the technology sector and, above all, we want to make it clear that technological careers are not and do not have to be male careers,” says Mateo Valero, director of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.
The rector of the UPC, Francesc Torres, assures: "We are convinced that STEAM vocations wake up offering references and giving examples of the social impact of technology. This year, the UPC and the BSC allied to offer this new action focused on the teenage audience. The content proposal has a high social awareness component and will feature the participation of excellent active technologists. I am convinced that this July, these young women will have a great time and that it will be a good way to wake up interest in our training offer. "
Tecnogirls will take place from July 5 to 11 at the Casa de Colonias El Jou Nature, in Guardiola de Berguedà. The price of the camp including accommodation, full board and the entire program of leisure and technology activities is € 495. Further information here (in Spanish)
Women in technology since childhood
On the part of BSC, this initiative joins the project launched more than a year ago, "We are young women researchers" with which the center seeks to contribute to increasing the interest of younger students in STEM subjects and in a very special way to attract the interest of girls. Fighting the gender gap in the scientific-technical area is one of the objectives of this program that is carried out thanks to the collaboration of the Barcelona City Council. More than 5,500 students participated in this program in 2019.
