Cross-departmental collaboration ensured that the symposium successfully fulfilled its aim to create a knowledge-sharing platform.
This was the first in a series of annual events highlighting the research of BSC doctoral students. The goal of the symposium is twofold: first, to provide a framework to share results of research undertaken by PhD students at BSC; second, to offer training sessions on topics and skills that will be useful to them as future researchers and professionals. Created within the framework of the Severo Ochoa Programme at BSC, in line with the project's aims relating to talent development and knowledge sharing, the symposium offers an interactive forum for PhD students, both those who are just beginning their research and those who have progressed far enough to share some results.
The directors of BSC strongly supported the creation of the symposium, and Mateo Valero gave the opening speech. Departmental directors, group leaders and advisors were also very supportive, successfully encouraging the participation of the students in the inaugural edition.
A total of 92 attendees registered for the event, with 55 attending the first day and 43 the second. Talks by invited speakers Carles Comes and Fernando Cucchietti on legal protection for computer programs and how to improve public presentations attracted audiences from all departments and generated interesting discussion. Over the course of the event, 25 PhD students representing all the research departments at BSC presented 15 talks and 10 posters.
The 1st BSC Doctoral Symposium was the result of cross-departmental collaboration and as such succeeded in fulfilling its aim to create a knowledge sharing platform. The Education and Training Team is looking forward to organising the 2015 BSC Doctoral Symposium with the broad participation of BSC PhD students, advisors and researchers.
