Most relevant on-going activities:

  • DESTINATION EARTH (DE_340106 Urban): Around 75% of Europeans live in urban environments, contributing more than 70% of CO2 emissions in Europe. At the same time, a significant proportion of city dwellers are vulnerable to climate risks. Heatwaves are the extreme weather event with the highest impact on human well-being, and they are projected to become more frequent, longer, and more severe with warming. In urban areas, the heat island effect exacerbates the impact of temperature stress in summer. ESMs with kilometre scale meshes offer an ability to study heat-waves globally, and with a better (more physical) representation of the global circulation systems (which for instance depend on the effects of remote convection and topography) that give rise to heat-waves.
To improve our understanding on how extreme events can be described for present and future conditions, within CATs heat stress index indicators for extreme heat conditions will be derived from the GSV. The indicators and the definition of long-term developments to better assess the impact of heatwaves in urban areas will be discussed with practitioners of urban planning.
  • EARLY-ADAPT (ERC Consolidator Grant; 02/2021-01/2026): Led by Joan Ballester from ISGlobal, the EARLY-ADAPT project aims to jointly analyse the environmental, socioeconomic and demographic drivers of recent trends in human health. In the frame of this project, we are collaborating with ISGlobal to investigate how to bias-correct the long-term CAMSRA reanalysis of the atmospheric composition over Europe, using the extensive network of air quality monitoring stations available. Combined with a very detailed health database, this will allow Joan Ballester's team to investigate the associated health impacts of air pollution.
