Biography

Luis Gascó is a Text Mining Research Engineer in the NLP for Biomedical Information Analysis Research Group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (Spain) where he focuses on the progress of clinical NLP in Spanish and other European languages. His work focuses on three verticals: the generation of Gold Standard datasets and the organization of shared-tasks; the optimization of manual annotation processes; and the development of language technologies that favor the implementation of NLP systems in medical environments. 

Luis Gascó has earned his doctoral degree from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid,  where he was awarded the university's extraordinary doctoral prize. His academic career highlights his multidisciplinary approach to research and innovation. With a solid educational background that includes a Bachelor's degree in Telecommunication Engineering, a Master's degree in Acoustic Engineering, and a Master's degree in Big Data and Business Intelligence, Luis has honed his expertise in diverse fields such as Machine Learning, NLP and statistics applied to several areas including environmental acoustics, city management and healthcare. In addition, he has received funding and training through the prestigious EIT Digital Doctoral School, further enhancing his skills and knowledge in the realm of technology transfer and innovation.

Throughout his research career, Luis has worked in international settings, contributing to projects in France and the United Kingdom. He has undertaken research stays at Télecom Paris and Nokia Bell Labs (Cambridge). Moreover, he is involved in renowned European research consortia such as DataTools4Heart, AI4Heart, and BioMatDB, among others. Additionally, Luis has co-organized highly significant shared tasks such as BioASQ and Social Media Mining For Health (SMM4H) at leading international conferences on NLP and AI, including COLING, NAACL, and CLEF.
