BSC disseminates its research in Material Sciences at the Psi-k Conference

17 Septiembre 2015

BSC researcher Georg Huhs participated in the Psi-k Conference held in San Sebastián last week. This is one of the largest events in the electronic structure community, happening every five years, and counted with 1200 attendees this year. BSC presented one poster and was mentioned on several others as collaborator.

As materials are at the very base of many technologies, calculations of materials properties starting at the quantum mechanical level has a large and constantly growing impact on the progress in many fields. Already now worldwide a large share of the High Performance Computing time is spent on materials simulations.

The BSC has a history in contributing to this field – for example José María Cela, Director of the CASE department at BSC, is one of the core developers of the widely used SIESTA program. The Poster presented at the Psi-k Conference describes how the outcome of a recent collaboration between BSC, ICMAB-CSIC, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory accellerates highly accurate calculations by orders of magnitude and thus pushes the limits of problem sizes accessible.
