How Artificial Intelligence can help the Cultural Heritage sector? Researchers from the Saint George on a Bike project, led by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center in collaboration with Europeana Foundation, are training AI systems to learn the historical context of the paintings in order for them to detect the objects that appear and also to create a more accurate system for the analysis of these paintings. It is true that humans could also add descriptive information to every painting manually. This however would be an unrealistic task as there are hundreds of thousands of images to analyse. Therefore, the possibility for AI systems to identify these kinds of objects can help the cultural heritage sector institutions, such as archives, museums and cultural heritage websites, in describing and classifying their art pieces automatically and it will result in a better experience for the users, who will be able to obtain a detailed description more easily.
